Sewage Backup Cleanup & Decontamination Abbotsford
Category 3 sewage extraction, biohazard decontamination and full safe-cleanup service.
Sewage backup is a Category 3 water damage event — the most serious and highest-risk category in the IICRC classification system. Whether it's a blocked sanitary lateral, a municipal sewer surcharge, a failed ejector pump or a collapsed drain line, sewage backup introduces pathogens, bacteria and biohazardous material into your property. It requires a decontamination protocol, not just a cleanup.
Category 3 water — also called black water — includes sewage, floodwater from rivers and streams and any water that has come into contact with sanitary waste. The contamination isn't always visible. Clear-looking water from a floor drain backup can still be contaminated with E. coli, Hepatitis A, Norovirus and other pathogens. This is why Category 3 events require full PPE for the crew, proper containment during removal and antimicrobial treatment of all affected surfaces.
All porous materials that came into direct contact with sewage backup must be removed and disposed of as biohazardous waste. This includes carpet, carpet padding, drywall to a height above the waterline, fibreglass insulation, wood flooring and any soft contents that were saturated. Semi-porous materials like concrete can be cleaned and treated with antimicrobial solutions, but only after thorough extraction.
After material removal, the affected area undergoes a systematic decontamination sequence: HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces, application of EPA-registered antimicrobial solutions with appropriate dwell time, air scrubbing with HEPA air filtration to capture airborne particulate. The sequence is documented at each stage with photos for the insurance file.
Structural drying follows decontamination once all contaminated material is out. Concrete and framing that tested within acceptable contamination ranges get dried with LGR dehumidifiers and air movers. Post-drying clearance testing confirms the structure is dry before any rebuild begins.
